Tooth Injury Treatment in Downtown Los Angeles

The first few minutes matter more than the rest of the week.

Trauma, an accident, or biting down on something hard — a tooth that has been knocked out, broken or cracked is urgent, and how quickly it is treated is often what decides whether it can be saved. Smile LA Downtown Modern Dentistry holds same-day appointments for exactly this.

What to do before you get here

How quickly a damaged tooth is treated is often what decides whether it can be saved at all, and with a knocked-out tooth the window is measured in hours rather than days. That puts an unusual amount of weight on what happens before you reach us — not because there is much to do, but because the few things that matter are easy to get wrong under the adrenaline. Keep anything that has come out of your mouth moist, control the bleeding, keep the swelling down, and get to the phone. Nothing else needs deciding by you. We hold same-day appointments for exactly this, so the limiting factor should be travel rather than the schedule.

  • A knocked-out tooth If you can, place the tooth in a container of milk or saline solution and contact us immediately. Keep it moist and bring it with you. The sooner you are seen, the better the chance of saving it.
  • A broken or cracked tooth Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, then come in promptly — that is what prevents infection and preserves the remaining tooth structure.
  • Bleeding Use clean gauze to control it.
  • Stay calm Panicking makes it worse. Assess what has happened and focus on getting professional help quickly.
Once you arrive

What we do once you are here

The first job is to see what has actually happened, including below the gum line where a fracture often runs further than it looks. Digital X-rays and 3D imaging make that quick, and they are in the same office.

Where the pulp of the tooth has been affected by the injury, the treatment is usually a root canal — trauma is one of the three common reasons a tooth needs one. Where the crown of the tooth is broken away, a crown restores its shape and function. Where the tooth cannot be saved, we will say so, and an implant is the usual permanent replacement.

Preventing the next one

Not every injury is avoidable, but two things account for a lot of them. Wear a custom sports guard for any contact sport — it shields the teeth from impact and reduces broken teeth and cut lips. And stop chewing hard objects: ice, hard candies and popcorn kernels crack teeth unexpectedly and often.

If it is not an injury

Severe pain with no obvious cause, swelling, or a lost filling are urgent too. See emergency dental care.

Tooth Injury FAQ

My tooth has been knocked out — can it be saved?
Often, if you act quickly. Place the tooth in milk or saline, contact us straight away, and bring it with you. The sooner you are treated, the better the chance.
Should I put the tooth back in the socket?
Keeping it moist is the priority, and milk or saline is the reliable way to do that. Call us and we will talk you through it.
I chipped a tooth and it does not hurt. Is that still urgent?
It is worth being seen promptly. Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress — coming in quickly is what prevents infection and preserves the tooth structure that is left.
Will I need a root canal?
Sometimes. Injury to a tooth can cause inflammation or infection of the pulp, which is one of the three common reasons a root canal becomes necessary. An examination and X-rays establish whether the pulp is involved.
Can you see me today?
Yes — we hold same-day emergency appointments and prioritise urgent cases.
How do I stop it happening again?
A custom sports guard for contact sport, and avoiding ice, hard candies and popcorn kernels. Those two cover most preventable tooth injuries.
