Comfort
Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Downtown Los Angeles
Inhaled, gone in minutes, and you drive yourself home.
Anxiety about the dentist is common, and it is worth saying so when you book. Nitrous oxide is the lightest of the three sedation options at Smile LA Downtown Modern Dentistry, and the only one that leaves no plan to make about getting home.

How it works
How nitrous oxide works
It is a gas, breathed through a small mask over the nose, and it takes effect within a few minutes. You stay awake and able to respond throughout — it takes the edge off rather than putting you under, which is the distinction that matters and the one most people are not expecting. The level is adjusted during the appointment rather than set once at the start, so it can be brought up for the part you are dreading and eased off for the rest. When the mask comes off the effect wears away within minutes. That short tail is the whole reason it fits into an ordinary day: no escort to arrange, no afternoon written off, nothing to plan around.
Why it suits an ordinary visit
What makes it practical
- Inhaled, not injected Nothing to swallow beforehand and no needle for the sedation itself.
- Wears off within minutes Which is what makes it the practical choice for an ordinary appointment.
- You can drive yourself home No escort to arrange, no day written off.
- You stay awake Aware of what is happening and able to talk to us.
When it is the right choice
Nitrous oxide suits ordinary treatment where the barrier is nerves rather than length: a filling, a cleaning you have been putting off, a first visit after a long gap. Where an appointment is longer or the anxiety is more significant, the other two options exist for a reason — see oral sedation and IV sedation.
Say so when you book
The single most useful thing you can do is tell us before the appointment rather than on the day. It changes how we schedule the visit, not just what we offer you when you arrive. All three options are described together on the technology page.

Nitrous Oxide FAQ
- Will I be unconscious?
- No. Nitrous oxide keeps you comfortable and aware — you stay awake and able to respond throughout.
- Can I drive afterwards?
- Yes. It wears off within minutes of the mask coming off, which is the main practical difference between this and the other two options.
- How is it given?
- It is inhaled through a small mask over the nose. There is nothing to take beforehand.
- How does it compare with the other options?
- It is the lightest of the three. Oral sedation is a tablet taken before the appointment and you will need someone to drive you; IV sedation is for longer surgical appointments and for patients with significant dental anxiety.
- Should I mention my anxiety when booking?
- Please do. Anxiety about the dentist is common, and knowing in advance lets us plan the appointment around it rather than react on the day.
