In-Office Teeth Whitening in Los Angeles

Up to eight shades, in a little over an hour.

The difference between professional whitening and a supermarket kit is not effort, it is depth — a light-activated gel reaches the stain rather than the surface. Smile LA Downtown Modern Dentistry uses Zoom, and you walk out with the result the same day.

How a Zoom session works

A team member applies the Zoom Whitening Gel to your teeth, then activates it with a low-heat Zoom Light. That lets the whitening agent pass through the enamel and into the dentin beneath, lifting stains that sit below the surface rather than polishing the surface itself — which is the actual difference between professional whitening and a kit off a shelf. It is depth, not effort. The whole appointment takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and most patients see six to eight shades of improvement in that one sitting. You are supervised throughout, which is what allows a stronger agent to be used than anything you could safely apply to yourself at home.

Why in the chair

Why in-office rather than at home

  • Speed A noticeably brighter smile in one visit, rather than weeks of nightly trays.
  • Effectiveness More effective than over-the-counter options at lifting deep stains, with longer-lasting and more consistent results.
  • Safety Carried out under the supervision of a licensed cosmetic dentist and monitored throughout.

The trade-off is that it happens on our schedule rather than yours. Where that is the problem, take-home whitening reaches a similar place more slowly.

The first 24 hours

Avoid dark-colored foods and drinks for the first day, or you undo some of the work. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity, which typically subsides within a few days — a desensitizing toothpaste and avoiding very hot or cold food helps it along.

What it will not lift

Whitening works on natural teeth only, so existing crowns and veneers keep their original shade and we will plan around that. Zoom is most effective on stains from food, drink and aging, and can be less effective on discoloration caused by medication. See teeth whitening for why teeth discolor in the first place.
