Retainer Replacement in Downtown Los Angeles

Come in sooner rather than when you get round to it.

A retainer left in a napkin, cracked in a bag, or one that has quietly stopped fitting — all three have the same answer, and the same reason to deal with it this week. Smile LA Downtown Modern Dentistry can make a replacement from a fresh scan.

Why the hurry

Why time matters here

Teeth start drifting as soon as retention stops. That is the entire reason this page exists and the only thing on it worth acting on today. A replacement made next week holds a position close to the one you had; one made in six months holds wherever your teeth have arrived by then, which may not be where you paid to put them. The drift is slow enough that you will not see it happening and quick enough to matter over a season. Past a certain point the honest answer stops being a new retainer and becomes a short course of aligners to recover the position first, and then a retainer — more time, and more cost, for having waited.

The three situations

The three situations

  • Lost The most common by a distance. Book a scan and a replacement — do not wait to see whether it turns up.
  • Cracked or warped Often from hot water, which warps the plastic. A damaged retainer does not hold reliably even when it still goes in.
  • No longer fits This one is a signal, not just an inconvenience: if it will not seat, teeth have already moved. Never force it.

How a replacement is made

From a new digital scan of where your teeth are now, not from your original records. That is the whole point — the retainer has to fit the mouth in front of us. The scanner is the same one used for clear aligners, so the impression takes minutes and there is no tray.

Avoiding the next one

Clean it daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap, keep it in a ventilated case rather than a napkin, and never use hot water. Full care guidance is on the retainers page.

Retainer Replacement FAQ

I lost my retainer. How urgent is it?
Urgent enough to book now. Teeth start drifting as soon as retention stops, and a replacement made sooner holds a position closer to the one you had.
My retainer will not go in any more. Should I force it?
No. If it will not seat, your teeth have moved — forcing it risks damaging the retainer or the teeth. Come in and we will look.
Can you use my old records?
A replacement is made from a new scan of where your teeth are now, because that is what it has to fit.
What if my teeth have already moved a lot?
Then the honest answer may be a short course of aligners before a new retainer. We will tell you which applies.
How do I stop damaging the next one?
Clean it with a soft toothbrush and mild soap, store it in a ventilated case, and never use hot water — it warps the plastic.
