About the CHA Birth Center

Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is an innovative leader in community health, providing safe, equitable care for all populations across Boston’s metro-north region. At the CHA Birth Center, our interdisciplinary team of skilled providers supports growing families with low-risk pregnancies with exceptional perinatal care. We take pride in our welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive approach to care, ensuring that individuals and families of all backgrounds feel comfortable and supported every step of the way, from prenatal care, to the labor and delivery process, and through postpartum bonding.

Job Purpose

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Doula to provide emotional, social, and educational support to new parents during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the early postpartum period. The Doula play a critical role in helping expectant parents navigate their childbearing journeys with confidence, comfort, and empowerment. In addition, with our commitment to ensuring culturally informed care for all our patients, the Doula crucially supports the unique perinatal needs of pregnant individuals within diverse immigrant communities and vulnerable patient populations throughout our service area.

This is an on-call role that requires flexibility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as well as the ability to work independently within a supportive, collaborative perinatal care team.

Key Responsibilities

During Labor:

• Provide continuous emotional and physical support during labor and in the first few hours postpartum.

• Offer culturally responsive support through an understanding of language, culture, and individual needs.

• Assist in the comfort of the patient in labor, offering massages, encouraging fluid intake, and providing reminders to empty their bladder as needed.

• Act as an advocate, facilitating communication between the patient and perinatal staff.

• Keep the patient informed about the progression of labor, ensuring they remain calm and relaxed, providing encouragement as needed, and empowering them to trust the birthing process.

During Postpartum:

• Provide home visits for up to 15 hours to assist with newborn care, breastfeeding, and family priorities.

• Offer emotional support, helping the new parent reflect on the birth experience and connect with other new parents.

• Assist with day-to-day activities and chores so the new parent can focus on bonding with their newborn baby.

• Share knowledge of community resources and services, as well as connect new parents with hospital staff for any follow-up wellness visits and medical questions.

Qualifications

• Work Experience: Previous experience attending births, conducting home visits, or providing parent/child support.

• Flexibility: Availability and ability to manage a demanding 24/7 on-call schedule.

• Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and health care providers. Capacity to take initiative, work independently, and remain calm in high-pressure situations.

Travel: Ability to travel to multiple sites for home visits and other duties, and to arrive within designated times for births.

Bicultural/Bilingual: Ability to communicate with individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. Bilingual/bicultural candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Fluency in English (speaking, reading, writing) required in order to communicate effectively with our patients and care team.

Certification: American Heart Association BLS Provider certification required.
