Wildland Firefighter - Direct Hire Authority

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Navajo Region, Branch of Fire Management in Fort Defiance, Arizona and will be filled from Standard PD Number: DX00500. Salary: $61,950 - $74,224 per year. Salary has been updated to reflect the new (GW) pay schedule specific for firefighter positions.

Location: 1 vacancy in Fort Defiance, AZ.

Duties include:

  • Directing the operation of a wildland fire engine.
  • Performing and directing others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and in the operation and maintenance of chainsaws.
  • Conducting and participating in crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
  • Ensuring the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.
  • Gathering and considering information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.
  • Making initial evaluation of fire situations; determining suppression methods to use, deployment of module/crew, type of tools to use and application of water.
  • Coordinating and providing oversight in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.
  • Planning and assigning work to be accomplished by subordinate positions, setting and adjusting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work.

Qualifications:

This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Supervisory Fire Engine Operator (SEOP) and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position.

Minimum qualification standards:

  • GS-7 : 1 year of creditable specialized wildland fire management work experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service.
  • Selective Placement Factors:
    • Primary Core Requirement: Engine Boss, (ENGB) or higher
    • Secondary Core Requirement: Incident Commander Type 5, (ICT5) or higher
    • Additional Required Training: S-211, Portable Pumps and Water Use
