Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Psychiatrist to lead and manage comprehensive mental health services within an institutional setting. The ideal candidate will be passionate about providing high-quality care and will be responsible for the overall direction, clinical coordination, and operational efficiency of the mental health program for individuals under care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Leadership & Patient Care:
- Provide overall direction and leadership for the facility's mental health services.
- Manage the administrative and clinical coordination of a comprehensive mental health care program.
- Conduct direct patient care, including psychiatric assessments, diagnosing conditions using DSM criteria, and developing individualized treatment plans.
- Prescribe, administer, and monitor psychotropic medications and their effects.
- Order and interpret necessary laboratory work.
- Offer a range of professional services, including individual, group, and family counseling, and education on disease processes.
- Participate in civil commitment proceedings as required.
- Team Management & Development:
- Supervise, mentor, and provide guidance to other mental health staff within the facility.
- Assist in coordinating professional services provided by contract personnel, ensuring their needs are addressed.
- Program Management & Improvement:
- Assess the ongoing needs for mental health services.
- Collect, maintain, and analyze statistical data; prepare comprehensive reports pertaining to mental health services.
- Evaluate current operations and recommend methods for improving operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Assist in developing and implementing innovative treatment and therapeutic programs.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Prepare and maintain accurate progress reports, case presentations, and recommendations for discharge planning.
- Ensure all services provided are meticulously documented and maintain the confidentiality of patient files.
- Audit files to verify completion of treatment and therapeutic programs.
- Properly process all reports and documents in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, laws, rules, procedures, policies, and standards.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Serve as a mental health staff liaison in group counseling, volunteer activities, and other events promoting mental health services.
- Communicate effectively and coherently with administration, staff, patients, visitors, and the general public, especially in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment.
- Assist administrative and medical staff in the development of statistical reports.
- Operational & Emergency Duties:
- Report to the assigned facility at designated hours for patient care and clinical duties.
- Accept on-call responsibilities as scheduled.
- Assist in the supervision of individuals under care, both within the facility and during community activities, promoting positive community relations.
- Review, process, and respond to legal matters (in conjunction with legal counsel) and attend court hearings when necessary.
- Read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal/non-legal documents.
- Maintain equipment and supplies, ordering replacements as needed.
- Perform rescue functions during emergencies, including administering basic emergency medical aid and ensuring safety.
- Remain alert and react quickly, efficiently, and calmly in emergency and high-stress situations.
- Take appropriate action to prevent or de-escalate potentially disruptive situations.
- May be assigned duties of any position in an emergency.
Qualifications & Attributes:
- Proven experience in a psychiatric role, preferably within an institutional or correctional setting.
- Strong understanding of DSM diagnostic criteria and psychopharmacology.
- Excellent leadership, administrative, and clinical coordination skills.
- Ability to supervise and mentor mental health professionals.
- Proficiency in developing and implementing treatment programs.
- Strong analytical skills to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle difficult contacts and mediate disputes effectively.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of professional skill and sound judgment.
- Resilience and ability to perform effectively in potentially antagonistic or high-stress environments, including exposure to verbal and mental challenges.
- Understanding of confidentiality requirements and legal processes relevant to mental health care in an institutional setting.
- Willingness to participate in in-service and other training programs.
- Physical ability to perform rescue functions and respond to emergencies.
