Job Summary: The Copywriter is a key contributor to United Way of King County’s communications team, responsible for crafting clear, compelling, and equity-centered content that advances the organization’s mission and strengthens community engagement. This role produces a wide range of written materials for both external and internal audiences, spanning donor communications, marketing campaigns, organizational storytelling, program updates, newsletters, and web content. The Copywriter thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, managing multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining message alignment and quality. Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications and partnering with the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications, this position plays a critical role in driving United Way’s fundraising, advocacy, and brand-building efforts through effective, strategic storytelling. Collaborate with the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications and Associate Director of Communications to review, prioritize, and manage a high volume of incoming project requests, ensuring strategic alignment and timely execution of assignments. Key player in weekly Editorial Meetings, maintains familiarity with organizational positions, United Way of King County programs, and communication objectives to ensure timely, accurate, and relevant messaging. Write, edit, and proofread content for a variety of platforms, including but not limited to: newsletters, website, appeals, donor correspondence, events, marketing material, and program updates. Work closely with designers to develop and present creative concepts that deliver to the creative brief. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all communications material for public distribution. Manage style guide, consults, and advises staff on writing and editorial issues. Uphold organizational voice, brand, message alignment, and visual identity standards in donor materials. Be excited about reimagining new communication best practices that center the communities we serve. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proven and persuasive, creative, technical, marketing, journalistic, and advertising writing skills. Demonstrated strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Proven nonprofit communications experience or knowledge, fundraising experience a plus. Proven ability to work on multiple, complex projects with a diverse team of colleagues and self-direct to meet strict deadlines. Ability to build productive relationships and work in a team environment. Demonstrated strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet short- and long-term deadlines without sacrificing quality. Proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Curiosity, humor, and high energy! Demonstrated excellent editorial skills. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Office, and PowerPoint) required. Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills – ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely. Strong commitment to social justice, equity, and demonstrated interest in applying racial and economic justice lenses in personal and workplace contexts. Thrives in a fast-paced environment. Lived experience or demonstrated professional skills working with a diverse work environment. Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, specializing in Communications, English, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field. At least 4 years’ copywriting, marketing, or creative services experience. Understanding of systemic and institutional racial bias; sensitivity to issues and concerns of communities of color and other diverse groups including working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds highly desired.
