The Candidate
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The Chief Marketing Office r (CMO) is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to external facing aspects of IEEE's global business and operations.The CMO is primarily responsible for linking IEEE intellectual property to potential markets that desire greater knowledge of our products and services.They will determine policies and practices for marketing efforts, and regularly interact with current and potential customers worldwide, and manage the demand generation process . The CMO will lead the development of the overall brand strategy that aligns with the newly created strategic plan of IEEE. A major focus of this position is to grow revenue and to continually create opportunities for revenue growth in both local and global markets .
The role reports to the IEEE Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer and is a member of the Management Council, IEEE's executive leadership team.They will oversee an operating unit of 35+ employees, which includes 4 direct reports.This position has full autonomy on overall business strategy, day-to-day operations and business deliverables but consults the IEEE Executive Director & COO for major strategic decisions that affect the whole organization.
Specific duties include but not limited to:
- Develops, directs, and executes strategic objectives for the operating unit in accordance with IEEE business goals and needs; Secures buy-in to overarching strategies and their implementation from IEEE Board of Directors and executive management
- Lead global member and customer engagement strategies, leveraging CRM and marketing automation platforms to build and sustain meaningful relationships across diverse markets.
- Provide strategic leadership and mentoring to a high-performing marketing and communications team, cultivating innovation, accountability, and continuous learning
- Develop and execute integrated digital marketing campaigns across web, email, social media, and paid channels, aligning with brand goals and audience behavior
- Incorporate AI-powered tools and strategies to enhance marketing effectiveness—particularly in personalization, content automation, and predictive analytics.
- Generates market research, gathers competitive intelligence, and provides appropriate analyses, including but not limited to separation of forecasts due to income growth by price increases from forecasts projecting income change due to an increase or decrease in customers.
- Apply data-driven decision-making by establishing KPIs, monitoring real-time analytics, and translating insights into actionable marketing strategies to drive performance and ROI
- Drive cultural agility and inclusive messaging, ensuring all campaigns and communications resonate with global and multicultural audiences.
- Oversees IEEE p ublic v isibility presence, including crisis communication, social media presence, and traditional media
- Ensures operating unit’s adherence to organization-wide policies, practices, and standards
- Foster cross-functional collaboration by partnering with product, sales, and customer experience teams to deliver unified go-to-market strategies
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
15- 20 years related work experience, with at least 7 years of management experience. Marketing Executive/Senior Leadership in a complex, diverse, global organization that annually sells a minimum of $100 million (USD) in large-scale intellectual property products. Ideal candidate has a strong financial management experience, that demonstrates a record success in managing a complex budgetary and forecasting process while growing revenue line.
- Must be culturally agile and possess a management style that has been successful in a global organization
- Must possess significant experience in leading, directing and managing people of various cultures and professional experience toward the achievement of shared business, operational, and revenue objectives; Experience must demonstrate a proven ability to work across an enterprise in a shared governance environment
- Style of organizational leadership must include collaboration and achieving consensus on and support of marketing projects and initiatives
- Must be able to speak to his or her record of innovation and creativity in attaining complex organizational goals
- Must have strategic business sense; Expected to be an agent of organizational change who will successfully apply strategic planning and leadership skills to the marketing and sale of new, large-scale intellectual property products
- Must possess strong conceptual thinking skills
- Must have a strong project and process orientation
- Individuals who have Project Management Professional (PMP) will be useful in the day-to-day operation of the sales and marketing department
- Must be a master of influencing his or her peers because many IEEE functional areas not in his or her span of control may have a direct impact upon the achievement of marketing objectives. Such functional areas include branding and imaging, volunteer relationship management, the technical societies, member and geographic activities, information technology, business administration, legal and regulatory constraints, and the Board of Directors
- Must be a business management professional with a strong foundation in personal integrity and business ethics.
- Must understand and promote the mission of IEEE and have an overall appreciation for the development and use of technology now and in the future.
- Must be able to resolve business challenges stemming from changing business models and financial, operational, and strategic goals/objectives
- Must be capable of persuasive and informational presentations. He or she will meet frequently with colleagues in IEEE societies as well as other tax-exempt organizations whose goals are aligned with those of the IEEE, as well as with other publishers of scientific, technical and medical information; Polished public speaking is an important aspect of this role
- Business fluency in a foreign language, especially Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish, or Hindi will be helpful
- Must be a technologically savvy knowledge worker who seeks out technology solutions to business challenges, Proficiency on the latest technologies important
- Domestic and international travel required up to 25% of the time; Must have valid travel credentials (e.g. passport, driver’s license, etc.)
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree required, Business Administration, Marketing, Engineering, or Computer Science. Master’s or other advanced degrees preferred.
In compliance with U.S. federal law, the successful candidate hired for the IEEE Chief Marketing Officer role will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification upon hire.
