About the Role

This is a 12-month full-time faculty position (219 days/year) in the Surgical Technology program at Klamath Community College. Primarily responsible for teaching the lab and clinical portion in KCC Surgical Technology program, while providing direct supervision and evaluation of students as they deliver patient care in a clinical facility, the simulation lab or the skills lab setting for 6-10 hours per day. There is some flexibility in work assignment but generally will be 4 days per week, which can begin at 5:00 am (day shift clinicals) or run through 10 p.m. (evening shift clinicals). In addition to teaching, faculty participate in college activities, committees, and other duties to support the mission and initiatives of the college. Keeping with the educational and practice standards set by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) is a primary responsibility of the person holding this position. The clinical lead/instructor is also responsible for working with the dean, director, and colleagues to provide the student with the best learning environment to promote success in the students enrolled in the Surgical Technology Program.

Responsibilities

Design and implement learning strategies for students:

  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the organizing framework and learning outcomes of the surgery tech program.
  • In collaboration with the lead faculty, develop, integrate, and evaluate student learning experiences, including selection of learning activities for assigned clinical, lab, and simulation courses, appropriate use of emerging teaching and learning methodologies, assessment and guidance of the student, and evaluation of patient and student safety within assigned courses.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and procedures necessary for the operation of the surgical tech program.
  • Evaluate student learning and performance; assign grades for assigned courses according to policies; determine student progress within the program courses.
  • Assist with clinical teaching associates and staff in practice sites to foster the student achievement of the program goals, learning outcomes, and expected competencies of the surgical tech students through the provision of copies of program goals, student learning objectives, clinical schedules, and student assessment/evaluations each term and as needed.
  • Provide a positive role model for the students, especially in areas of professionalism, conflict resolution, caring, advocacy, respect for self and others, collegiality, ethical behavior, ethical reasoning, and strong work ethic (including responsibility, dependability, and accountability) and provides constructive feedback to students.
  • Provide direct supervision and evaluation of students as they deliver patient care in clinical facility for 6-10 hours per day as necessary. Provides indirect supervision and evaluation of students in rotation or community health clinical sites.
  • Work with clinical agencies to schedule student experiences and assure currently clinical affiliation agreements are held.
  • Plan, design and implement simulation lab experiences using best practice guidelines in collaboration with lead faculty and simulation technician.
  • Participate cooperatively with other programs and agencies to develop appropriate and equitable access to practice sites.

Review and maintain the integrity of the curriculum offered by the discipline/program:

  • Maintain certificates and/or licenses necessary for employment eligibility.
  • Maintain acceptable standards of conduct for the profession.
  • Acquire new skills for program/discipline enhancement and development.
  • Identify and attend professional development activities that will lead to effective student learning.
  • Participate in college activities, committees, and other duties that support the mission and initiatives of the college.

Participate in evaluative process for self, department, and program:

  • Participate in departmental or discipline-specific meetings to provide guidance and subject matter expertise for the college’s strategic and academic planning, including accreditation.
  • Participate in college committee work as assigned.
  • Attend commencement and other college-sponsored programs as requested.
  • Promote the college mission, values, and vision.

Qualifications

  • Licensure: Licensed Surgical Technician

Required Skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally both orally and in writing within reasonable timeframes.
  • Strong computer and information literacy skills (MS Office/Word/Outlook/PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Commitment to the effective use of technology in face-to-face, online, hybrid, and synchronous learning environments.
  • Current knowledge teaching and learning theories and best practices.
  • Teaching experience in a community college setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Canvas learning management system preferred.
  • Experience teaching distance education courses preferred.
  • Full-time faculty collaborate regularly on curriculum, maintenance, implementation, and changes in schedule and clinical sites.
